Geographical Location of Bac Giang Province
Bac Giang is a midland province in the Northeast region of Vietnam, located in the northeastern part of the country. Bac Giang covers a natural area of 3,825.75 km², accounting for 1.2% of Vietnam’s total natural area.
Bac Giang is included in the Hanoi Capital Region planning.
Location:
– East: Borders Quang Ninh Province
– North: Borders Lang Son Province
– West: Borders Thai Nguyen Province and Hanoi
– South: Borders Bac Ninh Province and Hai Duong Province
Administrative Divisions
Bac Giang consists of 10 administrative units at the district level, including 1 city (Bac Giang City) and 9 districts: Hiep Hoa, Lang Giang, Luc Nam, Luc Ngan, Viet Yen, Yen Dung, Yen The, Son Dong, and Tan Yen. The province also has 209 administrative units at the commune level, comprising 10 wards, 15 townships, and 184 communes.
Population and Education
As of 2020, Bac Giang’s population reached 1.841 million, making it the most populous province and the largest economic hub in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous Region. It ranks fourth in the Hanoi Capital Region, after Hanoi, Bac Ninh, and Hai Duong, and is the 12th most populous province in Vietnam. The working-age population accounts for about 62.15% of the total, with over 1.1 million people. Of these, 60% of the workforce has received vocational training.
In terms of basic education, the province has 761 educational institutions; 91.3% of schools are permanent structures, and 92.1% meet national standards.
Regarding vocational education, Bac Giang has 1 university, 3 colleges, 4 intermediate schools, and 41 vocational training institutions. The province’s education sector is increasingly applying IT and digitization in management and teaching to meet the demand for high-quality labor and the needs of investors.
Development Goals for 2025
To meet economic development needs and the labor quality requirements of investors, Bac Giang aims to establish 50 vocational schools by 2025, including 4 vocational colleges and 10 intermediate schools. During the 2021–2025 period, vocational training institutions in Bac Giang plan to recruit and train approximately 147,500 people. By 2025, the province aims to have 80% of the workforce trained. Over 90% of university graduates, 85% of intermediate graduates, and 80% of those completing vocational training courses under three months are expected to find employment after training.
Transportation Infrastructure
Bac Giang lies along the Lang Son–Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai economic corridor, part of the Nanning–Singapore Trans-Asian Corridor. Its proximity to the “Hanoi–Hai Phong–Quang Ninh Economic Triangle” gives it a strategic advantage for economic development and cultural exchange within Vietnam and the region.
Bac Giang boasts a well-developed transportation network, including road, river, and rail systems.
Road System
The province has a total road length of 11,840 km, including five national highways totaling 290.6 km:
– National Highway 1: 19.4 km
– National Highway 31: 96.7 km
– National Highway 37: 60.4 km
– National Highway 17: 57.1 km
– National Highway 279: 57 km
Additionally, Bac Giang has expanded 18 provincial roads (totaling 404.99 km) and manages 8 district roads.
Bac Giang lies along the major northern traffic corridor (Hanoi–Lang Son), connecting to China via the Huu Nghi border gate. The Hanoi–Lang Son Expressway runs 39.45 km through Bac Giang.
Rail System
Bac Giang hosts a segment of the national railway network:
– Hanoi–Dong Dang Line: 167 km total length, 40 km through Bac Giang, connecting to China via the Huu Nghi border gate.
– Kep–Bai Chay Line: 106 km total length, 32.77 km through Bac Giang.
– Kep–Luu Xa Line: 57 km total length, 23 km through Bac Giang.
These railways hold potential for development, with average annual freight transport reaching 83,285 tons and passenger numbers at 14,274. Annual growth rates are 10.71% for passengers and 20.75% for freight.
Inland Waterways
Bac Giang has three major rivers: the Thuong River, the Cau River, and the Luc Nam River, with a total length of approximately 354 km.
Three inland waterway routes under central management span 222 km:
– Cau River Route (Pha Lai–Da Phuc): 104 km
– Thuong River Route (Pha Lai–A Lu): 62 km
– Luc Nam River Route (Nha Ba–Chu): 56 km
To boost waterway transport, Bac Giang is developing its port and wharf system, which is now modern and synchronized. With over ten ports and wharves and 23 inland water transport units, the system meets the needs for cargo transshipment and unloading for large vessels. Notable is A Lu Port, spanning 20,000 m², with an annual capacity of 250,000 tons.
Socio-Economic Development
Despite the severe global economic impacts of COVID-19, Bac Giang has demonstrated remarkable resilience, achieving notable successes in 2020:
– Economic Growth (GRDP): The highest in Vietnam at 13.02%.
– Labor Productivity: Increased by 9.9% to nearly 110 million VND.
– GRDP per Capita: Reached $2,900, up 14.2% from 2019.
– FDI Attraction: Ranked 9th nationwide, attracting $1.4 billion.
Bac Giang Province Industrial Park Drive Investment
Industrial development is a key economic driver in Bac Giang. The province currently has six operational Industrial Parks:
- Dinh Tram
- Song Khe–Noi Hoang
- Quang Chau
- Van Trung
- Viet Han
- Hoa Phu
These parks cover a total area of 1,462 ha. Early in 2021, the Prime Minister approved the addition of three new Industrial Parks:
– Yen Lu Industrial Park: 377 ha in Yen Lu and Nham Son Communes, Yen Dung District.
– Yen Son–Bac Lung Industrial Park: 300 ha in Yen Son and Bac Lung Communes, Luc Nam District.
– Tan Hung Industrial Park: 105.3 ha in Tan Hung and Xuong Lam Communes, Lang Giang District.
Expansion was also approved for existing parks:
– Quang Chau Industrial Park: Expanded by 90 ha.
– Hoa Phu Industrial Park: Expanded by 85 ha.
– Viet Han Industrial Park: Expanded by 148 ha.
By 2030, Bac Giang plans to establish an additional 23 Industrial Parks, totaling over 7,778 ha. These parks will be strategically located near highways and expressways, with convenient access to ports and airports. The workforce in these parks is projected to reach 600,000 by 2030.
In the 2021–2025 period, Bac Giang aims to:
– Achieve 14.15% annual GRDP growth.
– Increase GRDP per capita to over $5,500.
– Raise labor productivity by 13.4% annually.
– Ensure 100% of operational Industrial Parks and Clusters have centralized wastewater treatment systems.
