Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone (EPZ) is the first export processing zone in Vietnam, established in 1991. It is located in Tan Thuan Dong Ward, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, adjacent to the Phu My Hung Urban Area.

Strategically situated next to three major river ports—Ben Nghe Port, Tan Thuan Dong Port, and the specialized container port Vietnam International Container Terminals (VICT)—Tan Thuan EPZ is one of the most bustling waterway trading hubs in Ho Chi Minh City.

Covering a total area of 300 ha, 195 ha of which is designated for factories and warehouses, approximately 80% of the designated area has been utilized. The zone is developed by Tan Thuan Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Tan Thuan Industrial Development One Member Co., Ltd. (IPC) and Phu My Hung Asia Holding (formerly CT&D Group – Taiwan).

Most businesses operating within the EPZ focus on export-oriented production. Goods and materials entering and leaving the zone are treated as export and import goods, with enterprises benefiting from preferential export and import tax rates.

Economic Significance

Tan Thuan EPZ holds a vital position in Ho Chi Minh City’s economy. As a pioneering industrial model, it has been instrumental in attracting 233 investment projects from 25 countries by the end of 2021, with a total investment capital of approximately USD 2.1 billion, creating jobs for over 60,000 workers.

However, many traditional manufacturing industries still dominate the zone, and several factories have degraded or ceased operations. Before the land lease expires in September 2041, discussions are ongoing to transition from traditional industries to high-tech development, combining residential and commercial services.
