Geographical Advantage
Lao Cai is a mountainous border province located between the Northeast and Northwest regions of Vietnam. It holds a strategic position at the center of the Kunming – Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh economic corridor. With a 203 km border shared with Yunnan Province (China), Lao Cai serves as an important gateway for trade between Vietnam, ASEAN countries, and Southwest China.
The province has two international border gates (Lao Cai – Hekou) and several auxiliary border gates such as Ban Vuoc, Hoa Chu Phung, Lo Co Chin, and Y Ty, creating favorable conditions for trade, logistics, and import–export activities.
Modern and Diverse Transport Infrastructure
Lao Cai is one of the few mountainous provinces in Vietnam with a comprehensive transport system, including road, railway, waterway, and air routes (under development):
Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway (264 km) directly connects to the Kunming – Hekou Expressway (China).
Hanoi – Lao Cai – Kunming International Railway handles over 1 million tons of goods annually.
Lao Cai Airport (Cam Con, Bao Yen District) is under construction and will accommodate A320/A321 aircraft.
The Red River and Chay River serve as major waterways supporting regional cargo transport.
Industrial and Mineral Potential
Lao Cai possesses rich mineral resources with over 35 types of minerals, including:
Apatite: approximately 2.5 billion tons
Quy Sa iron ore: about 120 million tons
Copper: over 100 million tons
This provides a strong foundation for the development of the mining, metallurgy, and chemical industries.
Industrial Parks and Economic Zones
The province has established multiple large-scale industrial and cluster zones, with an occupancy rate reaching 95% as of 2018.

Total area: 1,100 ha
Key projects include:
Copper smelting plant (capacity 10,000 tons/year, expanding to 20,000 tons/year)
DAP No. 2 fertilizer plant (capacity 330,000 tons/year)
Duc Giang Chemical Complex: phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, DCP, superphosphate, and yellow phosphorus production
Lao Cai Border-Gate Economic Zone
Total area: 15,929.8 ha
One of nine national key border-gate economic zones prioritized for government investment
Fully equipped with infrastructure, warehousing, logistics, and trade services
Attractive Investment Environment
Lao Cai consistently ranks among the top provinces in Vietnam for the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). The local government applies the principle of “administration accompanying enterprises”, promoting administrative reform and offering incentives in taxation, land, and infrastructure for foreign and domestic investors.
